Resumen

Se postula que los nombres escogidos para referirse al espacio público se relacionan con concepciones y posturas acerca del mismo y de otras categorías geográficas subsidiarias, entre las que se cuentan territorio y lugar. Las fuentes sociales de poder disputan inicialmente las nomenclaturas que invisten al espacio, ya que éstas influyen en el cómo se percibe tanto su respectiva materialidad como también los procesos que engloba asociados generalmente a la búsqueda de justicia, integridad, paz, preservación de orden, estabilidad y otros objetivos apetecidos socialmente. No son pocos los cientistas sociales que han abordado la conflictividad espacial, pero nos pareció pertinente detenernos en el análisis de las relaciones que estableció Henri Lefebvre entre la naturaleza del espacio y las disputas materiales y simbólicas. Se sostiene que es posible encontrar en la obra del sociólogo urbano francés insumos para reflexionar acerca de los eventos enmarcados en el llamado “estallido social” en Santiago, de noviembre de 2019. Nos centramos en las denominaciones aplicadas a la Plaza Baquedano de Santiago de Chile (o Plaza de la dignidad); al respecto postulamos que estas enunciaciones reflejaron tensiones que entrelazaron distintas producciones espaciales con narrativas sociales, construcción de identidades y significados territoriales. Por ello se concluye que los nombres y las toponimias son cruciales en las disputas de soberanía, ya que evocan conflictos y transforman los territorios en medios para alcanzar objetivos. Al imponer nombres, se busca invisibilizar otros posibles o restarles importancia estratégica. A mayor abundamiento, la denominación impuesta confiere un sentido de memoria y significado a individuos y colectividades, convirtiéndose entonces en un catalizador de nuevas formas de vida y territorialidades.
